Saturday Night Live: John McCain November 1, 2008

Last night Senator John McCain made another appearance on SNL.  In fact he appeared twice, both at the show’s opening in a QVC sketch and again on Weekend Update.  Its a wonder to me though that the republicans continue to accept invitations to appear on the show.  I suppose that is representative in the brilliance of the writers, who’s satirical wit is able to captivate both sides of the aisle.

In the first of the two sketches, Tina Fey plays Sarah Palin again, and together she and McCain host a special episode of QVC in an attempt to poke fun at Obama’s infomercial.  In the sketch there is a line about being a maverick-republican defined as a republican without large campaign financing.  It was worth a chuckle.

Later in the show, McCain appeared again on the news segment, Weekend Update.  In it he outlined alternative campaign strategies for the next couple of days.  They included the “Reverse Maverick, the Double Maverick” and one coined “The Sad Grandpa” in which McCain made a plea that Obama would have a lot more chances to run for office, but that this would be his last so we should vote for him.

I have to admit that the McCain I saw last night was the McCain I like, as a person.  Something that I think has been missing from much of his campaign.

While I am not sure I buy the whole maverick branding around the McCain-Palin ticket, at a lot of levels, the folks at SNL doing the writing certainly have earned the label.
